Central EMC Casts Eye Towards Hurricane Irene

SANFORD, N.C.– Central EMC is monitoring Hurricane Irene, which is currently gaining strength off the Atlantic coast and is expected to become a major hurricane later today or Wednesday.  The cooperative stands ready to restore power should outages occur in the wake of Hurricane Irene’s possible visit to the state.

Electric cooperative personnel have begun to double-check equipment and supplies that will allow us  to restore power if Irene causes major outages in our service territory. When severe weather causes outages, Central Electric line crews begin working immediately to restore service in a safe and efficient manner.

Central Electric’s power outage number is 1-877-766-6769. Comprehensive storm and electric safety information can be found at www.centralelectriconline.com.

Now is the time to prepare an emergency kit that includes non-perishable food and bottled water, a flashlight, radio, batteries and any other items necessary for getting through a power outage. Remember to NEVER touch a fallen power line; fallen lines can be energized, and touching them could result in serious injury or even death.

Central Electric is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative based in Sanford, serving approximately 21,000 consumers in parts of Chatham, Harnett, Lee and Moore counties.
