85 Years of Power and Progress
Eighty-five years ago, a simple but powerful idea changed life across rural North Carolina: neighbors working together to bring electricity to communities that larger power companies would not serve.
To celebrate this milestone, Central Electric has produced a special 85th Anniversary video featuring the memories and reflections of members whose lives were transformed by rural electrification. Through their stories, viewers will hear firsthand what life was like before electricity arrived and how the cooperative model helped bring new opportunities, comfort and convenience to families across our service area.
For many rural residents life before electricity meant relying on oil lamps for light, drawing water by hand and completing household chores without the modern conveniences we take for granted today. When electric service finally reached their communities, it was more than just a new utility. It was a life-changing moment that connected families to new possibilities and helped improve their quality of life.
The video also highlights the cooperative difference. Unlike investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives were built by the people they serve. Central Electric’s member-owners came together with a shared vision, creating an organization focused on providing reliable service and meeting the needs of local communities. That same commitment continues today through the board members who help guide the cooperative’s future and the employees who work around the clock to keep the lights on.
As we reflect on the past 85 years, we are reminded that our story is about more than power lines and substations. It is a story of people, partnerships and progress. It is the story of members who believed in working together to build a better future for themselves, their families and future generations.
Today, Central Electric serves more than 24,000 members across central North Carolina, but our mission remains the same as it was in 1941: providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity while improving the quality of life in the communities we serve.
