Advocating for Stable Energy Policies
This spring, Central Electric participated in advocacy efforts at both the national and state levels. In April, cooperatives from across the country traveled to Washington, D.C., for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Legislative Conference. Then in May, cooperative leaders met with North Carolina lawmakers during the annual Rally in Raleigh. At both events, discussions centered on key priorities that directly affect reliability and affordability.
First, we advocated for permitting reform that provides long-term stability and predictability for electric generation resources. Reliable electricity depends on secure, always-available resources that operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Clear permitting processes allow cooperatives to plan long term and invest wisely. When projects are delayed or regulatory requirements change frequently, costs increase and reliability can be put at risk.
Second, we urged lawmakers to modernize FEMA’s disaster recovery process. After Hurricane Helene devastated large portions of North Carolina in late 2024, electric cooperatives across the state worked quickly to restore power. However, lengthy and complex reimbursement requirements added time, cost and uncertainty. Reducing red tape within FEMA would help utilities recover faster after disasters while limiting the financial burden passed on to members.
Third, we emphasized the importance of reducing long-term policy uncertainty related to electric generation. Constantly changing regulations make it harder to plan, increase risk, and drive up costs over time. Stable, realistic policies allow cooperatives to focus resources on maintaining reliable service rather than reacting to shifting rules.
While energy policy can be complex, the message shared with lawmakers was straightforward. Through ongoing advocacy at the state and national levels, Central Electric is working to ensure our communities have a strong voice in shaping energy policy. These efforts help protect the cooperative mission and support a stable energy future for our members.
