Capital Credits Headed Your Way
Unlike investor-owned utilities that return profits to shareholders, Central Electric operates on a not-for-profit basis, with excess margins allocated to members as capital credits.
When financial conditions allow, the Board of Directors can retire, or return, a portion of those capital credits to members. For 2026, the Board has approved a general capital credits retirement of $1.25 million, which represents the remaining balance of 2007 and 60% of the 2008 balance. This marks the 18th consecutive year Central Electric has returned capital credits to its members.
Capital credits are based on each member’s business with the cooperative during the years being returned. Eligible members receiving more than $25 will be mailed a check; smaller amounts will be applied as a bill credit.
Capital credits are one of the most tangible benefits of being part of an electric cooperative. Instead of benefiting outside investors, our margins are allocated to the members we serve. It’s another example of the cooperative difference and our commitment to putting members first.
