Leadership in Action

This summer, Sofia Macias of Lee Early College and Gabriel Medina of Southern Lee High School represented Central Electric on the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. Sponsored by Central Electric, the students joined peers from across North Carolina and the country for a week focused on leadership, government, and the cooperative way of life.

While in the nation’s capital, Sofia and Gabriel toured historic landmarks and memorials, visited the U.S. Capitol, and met with members of Congress and their staff. They engaged in meaningful conversations about civic engagement and careers in public service, while gaining a firsthand look at how our government works.

The experience also allowed students to connect with other young leaders from across the state and nation. Through group discussions, educational programs, and shared experiences, they developed leadership skills, broadened their perspectives, and built friendships that will continue long after the trip ended.

In addition to learning about American history, the Youth Tour also gave students a deeper understanding of electric cooperatives and the many ways they invest in local communities through educational programs, scholarships, and leadership development opportunities.

Central Electric proudly sponsors two local high school students each year for the Youth Tour. Applications for the 2027 Youth Tour will open in September for high school juniors and seniors interested in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
