POINT OF VIEW: Investing in Youth and Education

From the desk of CEO & General Manager, Eddie Oldham

"Supporting youth and education is one of the most important ways we invest in the future of our communities."

As we continue our “Your Questions Answered” series, we’re focusing on the topics that matter most to you, our members, and that includes how we invest in the future of our communities. This month’s question: How does the co-op support local
youth and education?

The answer begins with another of our cooperative principles: Concern for Community. One of the most meaningful ways we live out this principle is by supporting the students, teachers and families who make our communities strong. We believe that when young people are given opportunities to learn and grow, the entire community benefits.

You may already be familiar with some of the programs we offer. Through Bright Ideas, we provide grants to local educators to fund creative classroom projects that bring learning to life. Each year, we also award scholarships to help students continue their education after high school, easing the financial burden on families and opening doors to new opportunities.

Our commitment to developing future leaders is also reflected in programs like Youth Tour, where selected high school students travel to Washington, D.C., to learn more about government, history and the cooperative business model. Closer to home, initiatives like Give Us an A and Cooperative All-Stars Sports Camp recognize student achievement and encourage young people to stay active, engaged and connected.

Beyond these programs, our employees are proud to take part in service projects throughout the year, many of which directly benefit children and families in our service area. Whether it’s supporting local schools, partnering with nonprofit organizations or volunteering in our community, these efforts reflect our shared commitment to making a positive difference.

This month’s feature story highlights another meaningful way we support families through our work with foster care programs in our service area. By partnering with local organizations and lending our time and resources, we are able to help meet the needs of foster families who open their homes to children in our communities.

For us, supporting youth and education isn’t just a program, it’s an investment in the future of our communities. While providing reliable and affordable electricity remains our core mission, we know that empowering the next generation is just as important to building a strong and vibrant cooperative.

Stay tuned for next month’s question in our series as we continue to highlight what makes your cooperative unique.

Until next time,
